Fast Action Prevents Organizational Chaos

Abilities in Motion (AIM) is an advocacy organization serving the disabled population in Pennsylvania. Their executive director, Stephanie Quigley, hired TurboExecs because her organization had lost their Director of Finance.

An organization without financial leadership often leads to chaos. That’s why Stephanie acted quickly to hire TurboExecs instead of recruiting an employee.

If Stephanie hadn’t hired TurboExecs when she did, she believes Abilities in Motion would have been left in the lurch and struggling with financial decisions, and some urgent actions that they needed to take, like:

  1. CARES Act funds they received: They needed to know the remaining balance and submit compliance reporting by the impending deadline.
  2. Cash flow oversight: Millions move in and out of the organization each month for the services they provide. Can they meet payroll? Are their reimbursements equal to what they invoice?
  3. Construction on a new building: Set to begin, and they needed to analyze and choose the best loan proposal as soon as possible.

Beyond Day-to-Day Accounting

Stephanie maintained fiscal oversight of AIM, while TurboExecs filled the CFO and controller roles. AIM now had a holistic view of its financial picture and a strategic focus.

One of those strategies was buying and building out a new building. With Patty’s expertise, Stephanie navigated the complex world of banking and large-dollar construction loans. Getting all of the details of the term sheets on a consistent basis was the first step; next was knowing that these banks would require AIM’s full banking relationship as a condition of the loan.  The result was the selection of a financial institution that had the best loan terms, along with the best online platform for AIM’s daily cash management requirements.

AIM was also preparing for an audit of CARES Act (COVID) Federal funding. The TurboExecs team played a pivotal role in gathering the supporting documentation and submitting the final accounting of the use of funds under a tight federal deadline. The team also tackled gathering all the required documentation for AIM’s annual financial audit.

“What the TurboExecs team did was significant. They went beyond day-to-day accounting to help AIM.”

“Patty was very supportive and laid things out for me in a way that was accurate, not confusing as far as accounting. Because I am not an accountant. She provided information to me in a way that made complete sense. I was able to make the best decisions based on the complete and appropriate information that she gave me.”

Valuable Insights to Streamline and Simplify

Patty and her team came very highly recommended, so Stephanie was confident that she had someone that she could work with. She was not disappointed.

TurboExecs helped AIM zero in and look at internal processes and concepts, which helped AIM understand the how and the why of what they were doing. And that has been the most valuable aspect of working with TurboExecs to date. Their tips and pointers will continue to shape how AIM’s accounting and finance department looks for years to come.

Patty and TurboExecs brought insight to AIM that a staff person might not have. Their outside perspectives helped AIM update its outdated practices.

“Patty told me, ‘Stephanie, accounting is accounting, and payroll is payroll.’ Those simple little observations changed how I looked at the way we were doing things. It also influenced the way our internal departments were set up.

At first, I came up with a million reasons why accounting isn’t accounting and payroll isn’t payroll. But in the end, I realized Patty was 100 percent right. It helped us immensely to streamline and simplify things internally.”
